Abstract

Background/Objective: Noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), which become more frequent as the population ages and require lengthy therapy and care that is difficult for both patients and caregivers to manage, are among the most common causes of death worldwide and nationally. The treatment and care of these diseases are crucial for preventing complications related to the diseases and their treatment, reducing disabilities and deaths, and improving the quality of life. In this context, the concept of palliative care gains importance in improving quality of life and preventing premature deaths from NCDs. A fundamental aim of occupational therapy, which holds a significant place within palliative care, is to ensure people's participation in daily living life activities for rehabilitation. As a fundamental human need, occupations range from daily activities undertaken by individuals to spend time with family and communities and to find meaning in life; they encompass things people should do, want to do (hobbies), and are expected to do-and are, therefore, both cultural and individual.

The purpose of this study is to emphasize the importance of occupational therapy in palliative care.

Conclusion: Nurses, who oversee the quality and continuity of care, can act as coordinators in situations requiring a multidisciplinary approach like palliative care, because they spend more time with patients and are easily accessible. In palliative care, occupational therapy is important for maintaining optimal treatment and care for patients, improving their well-being and quality of life.
